West Bengal Police Examine Documents After Massive Cash Recovery

In a major cash recovery operation, police seized nearly ₹1.77 crore from a locked room inside a private school in Kanchrapara and detained the institution’s accountant for questioning.

According to a senior police officer, the recovery was made during an overnight search operation carried out on the basis of specific intelligence inputs received by the authorities.

The cash was found concealed inside a locked room within the school premises during the search conducted by the investigating team.

“The cash has been seized, and an investigation is underway to ascertain its source. We are examining documents and questioning those connected with the institution,” the police officer said.

Investigation Underway

Following the seizure, investigators have launched a detailed probe to determine:

• The origin of the recovered cash,
• Whether the money was linked to any illegal activity,
• The purpose for which the funds were being stored on the premises, and
• The role of individuals associated with the educational institution.

Police officials said the school’s accountant has been detained for questioning and is being interrogated regarding the circumstances surrounding the cash recovery.

Examination of Documents

Authorities have begun scrutinising financial records and other documents recovered during the operation to establish whether the amount was duly accounted for or represented unreported transactions.

The investigation is also expected to examine whether other school officials had knowledge of the money being kept inside the institution.

Officials indicated that additional agencies could be informed if evidence of financial irregularities, tax violations, or other offences emerges during the course of the investigation.

The seizure has drawn attention in the district, with residents expressing surprise over the discovery of such a large amount of cash within an educational institution.

Police have not yet disclosed the identity of the school or the accountant, stating that revealing further details at this stage could hamper the ongoing investigation.

As inquiries continue, authorities are expected to record statements from individuals connected to the institution and verify the legitimacy of the recovered funds.
