West Bengal Orders Fresh Interviews for Medical Faculty Promotions
The West Bengal government has cancelled the ongoing promotion process for faculty appointments in the state’s Medical Education Service, ordering a fresh selection exercise for key academic positions in government medical institutions.
According to an official, the Directorate of Medical Education has withdrawn the promotion panel prepared after interviews conducted in March for appointments to the posts of:
- Assistant Professor
- Associate Professor
- Professor
in state-run medical colleges and hospitals.
A notification issued on Wednesday confirmed that the earlier panel had been scrapped and that eligible candidates would be required to submit fresh applications and appear for new interviews as part of the revised process.

Review of Previous Decisions
The move comes amid a broader review being undertaken by the newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of administrative decisions taken during the tenure of the previous All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration.
While officials did not specify the reasons behind the cancellation of the existing promotion panel, the decision is being viewed as part of the government’s efforts to reassess recruitment and promotion procedures in various sectors.

Impact on Medical Faculty
The cancellation is likely to affect a large number of doctors and teaching professionals who had participated in the interviews earlier this year and were awaiting the outcome of the promotion process.
Faculty promotions in government medical colleges play a crucial role in:
- Filling senior teaching positions,
- Maintaining academic standards,
- Strengthening healthcare education, and
- Ensuring adequate staffing in medical institutions.
The fresh selection exercise could lead to delays in appointments to higher academic posts until the revised process is completed.
Focus on Transparency
The state government is expected to outline detailed guidelines for the new round of applications and interviews in the coming days.
Observers note that the decision reflects the administration’s emphasis on reviewing existing procedures and ensuring transparency and accountability in appointments within the medical education system.
Medical fraternity members are now awaiting clarity on the timeline for the revised recruitment process and the criteria that will govern the fresh round of promotions.
