The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday carried out searches at multiple premises in connection with a money laundering investigation linked to an alleged ₹195-crore liquor transport scam in Andhra Pradesh.
According to officials, a total of five locations associated with individuals suspected to be involved in the case were searched under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Among the premises covered during the operation were those linked to former Karumuri Nageswara Rao, who served as the Civil Supplies Minister in the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government, and his son.
Alleged ₹195-Crore Scam
The case pertains to allegations of irregularities in the transportation of liquor, resulting in an estimated financial loss of around ₹195 crore.
Investigators suspect that proceeds generated through the alleged scam may have been laundered through various channels, prompting the ED to initiate proceedings under the PMLA.
Searches Across Multiple Premises
Officials said the coordinated searches targeted properties and establishments linked to individuals believed to have played a role in the alleged offence.
The objectives of the raids include:
- Identifying financial transactions connected to the alleged scam,
- Tracing the movement of funds,
- Gathering documentary and digital evidence,
- Establishing the money trail, and
- Identifying proceeds of crime under the anti-money laundering framework.
PMLA Investigation
The ED’s probe is based on predicate offences registered by other investigative agencies. Under the PMLA, the agency is empowered to investigate the laundering of proceeds derived from scheduled offences and attach assets linked to such activities.
No official statement has yet been issued regarding recoveries made during the searches or whether any arrests are imminent.
Political Significance
The searches assume political significance as they involve a former minister of the previous YSRCP administration in Andhra Pradesh.
The opposition and ruling parties are expected to closely watch the developments as the investigation progresses.
Officials indicated that further action would depend on the evidence collected during the raids and the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
