TMC Bank Account Freeze: Supreme Court Upholds Interim Position of Calcutta HC
The Supreme Court has refused to interfere with a Calcutta High Court order denying interim relief to the Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the All India Trinamool Congress against the Enforcement Directorate’s decision to freeze three party bank accounts in a money-laundering probe.
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to interfere with a Calcutta High Court order that denied interim relief to the Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) against the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) decision to freeze three bank accounts of the party as part of a money-laundering investigation.
A bench comprising Justices M M Sundresh and P B Varale said it was satisfied that the High Court had passed a “balanced” order after examining the records.
The bench noted that the main writ petitions challenging the action remain pending before the Calcutta High Court. It observed that discussing the merits of the matter at this stage could affect the proceedings pending before the High Court.
The Supreme Court therefore said the interim orders already passed adequately addressed the interests of the parties and declined to interfere with them.
The main petitions will continue to be considered by the Calcutta High Court, where the broader challenge to the ED’s action remains pending.
