In a dramatic turn in the unfolding political crisis within the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday entered the party’s central office-cum-residence of party supremo Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata’s Kalighat area.

According to sources, the CID officials arrived at 30B Harish Chatterjee Street, the official residence and party office of Banerjee, during the late afternoon. They were accompanied by personnel from Kalighat Police Station as well as a sizeable contingent of women police officers.

The investigators reportedly encountered a brief standoff with security personnel and a party leader before eventually gaining entry to the premises. The visit forms part of the CID’s probe into allegations that signatures of several TMC legislators were forged on documents submitted to the Assembly Speaker.

The controversy centres around a proposal seeking recognition of the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The alleged forging of legislators’ signatures has triggered a major dispute within the party and contributed to the widening rift in TMC ranks.

The CID’s action follows the issuance of notices by the agency in recent days seeking information related to the disputed documents and the circumstances surrounding their submission to the Speaker’s office.

The investigation comes at a time when the Trinamool Congress is grappling with one of its most turbulent phases, marked by leadership disputes, resignations, allegations of internal sabotage, and public expressions of dissent by party members following its recent electoral setback.

Political observers believe the outcome of the probe could have significant implications for the party’s internal dynamics and the functioning of the opposition in the state legislature.

As the investigation progresses, the CID is expected to examine documentary evidence, verify the authenticity of signatures, and question individuals connected to the preparation and submission of the proposal.

Further developments are likely as the agency continues its inquiry into a controversy that has deepened divisions within one of West Bengal’s principal political parties.
