India on Tuesday strongly condemned Pakistan over reports of police action against protesters in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), alleging that Islamabad’s actions reflected a pattern of human rights abuses and suppression of dissent.

The reaction from Ministry of External Affairs came after reports indicated that more than 20 people were killed during clashes and police action against demonstrators in several parts of PoK.

Addressing the media, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal accused Pakistan of resorting to “brutality” against the people of the region. He said there had been “desperate” attempts by Islamabad to cover up its governance failures and divert international attention from what India described as serious human rights violations.

Jaiswal asserted that the international community should take note of the developments and hold Pakistan accountable for the alleged abuses committed against civilians in the territory.

According to reports, protests had erupted across multiple areas of PoK over various local grievances, leading to confrontations between demonstrators and security personnel. The reported deaths have drawn attention to the prevailing situation in the region and triggered renewed debate over the treatment of residents.

India has consistently maintained that Jammu and Kashmir, including areas under Pakistan’s control, remains an integral part of the country. New Delhi has frequently raised concerns regarding the condition of civil liberties and human rights in PoK at international forums.

The latest remarks from the MEA add a new dimension to the already strained relationship between India and Pakistan, with both countries often exchanging sharp views on issues related to Kashmir and cross-border matters.

As reports from PoK continue to emerge, international observers are expected to closely monitor developments in the region, including the humanitarian and political implications of the reported crackdown.
