A court in West Bengal on Tuesday remanded Jahangir Khan to five days of police custody in connection with multiple criminal cases, including allegations of extortion.

Khan was arrested on Monday from the Panitanki area near the IndiaNepal border by law enforcement authorities.

The Diamond Harbour Sub-Divisional Court granted the police custody following a request from the prosecution, which informed the court that seven First Information Reports (FIRs) had been registered against Khan at Falta Police Station.

According to officials, the cases pertain to allegations of extortion and other offences currently under investigation. Police sought custodial interrogation to gather further evidence and examine Khan’s alleged involvement in the cases.

Khan had unsuccessfully contested the Falta Assembly Constituency during the recent West Bengal Assembly elections. Reports indicate that he had not been seen in the South 24 Parganas constituency since a few days before the repoll conducted there on May 21.

Investigators are expected to question Khan regarding the allegations outlined in the FIRs and examine any possible links between the cases. Further legal proceedings will follow upon completion of the police custody period.

The arrest adds to a series of high-profile political and criminal investigations in West Bengal following the recently concluded Assembly elections, with authorities continuing to pursue cases involving allegations of extortion, intimidation, and other offences.

As the probe progresses, police are likely to present their findings before the court and seek further directions based on the outcome of the investigation.
