In a significant breakthrough against drug trafficking, nine people from Manipur were arrested in the early hours of Friday after authorities recovered 740 grams of heroin during a joint operation in Mizoram’s Aizawl district, officials said.

The operation was carried out at New Vervek village by a joint team comprising personnel from the Excise and Narcotics Department, the Assam Rifles, and members of the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA).

According to an official statement, the narcotic substance was found concealed inside 61 soap cases, a method frequently used by traffickers to transport drugs discreetly and evade detection.

The nine accused, all residents of neighbouring Manipur, were apprehended on the spot and taken into custody for further legal proceedings. Their identities were not immediately disclosed by the authorities.

Officials suspect that the seized heroin was part of a larger trafficking network operating in the northeastern region, which has increasingly emerged as a transit corridor for narcotics due to its proximity to international borders.

Investigators are now examining the source of the contraband, its intended destination, and whether the accused had links with organised drug syndicates involved in cross-border smuggling activities.

The involvement of the Central Young Mizo Association, one of Mizoram’s most influential civil society organisations, highlights the collaborative approach adopted in the state to tackle the menace of drug abuse and trafficking.

The seized heroin and the arrested individuals have been handed over to the relevant authorities, and a detailed investigation has been initiated under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Law enforcement agencies have reiterated their commitment to intensifying surveillance and conducting regular operations to curb the illegal drug trade, which continues to pose a serious threat to public health and regional security.
