The West Bengal government has directed its employees to extend full cooperation in the installation of smart electricity meters at their residences as part of the Centre’s ongoing power sector reform initiatives.

According to an official, instructions have been issued to all departmental heads, district magistrates, divisional commissioners, as well as senior officials including the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Kolkata Police Commissioner, asking them to inform employees under their jurisdiction to facilitate the installation process.

The smart meter rollout is being undertaken in areas served by the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) and forms part of a broader effort to modernise the state’s electricity distribution infrastructure.

A communication issued by the Office of the Chief Secretary on June 10 stated that the initiative is being implemented under the Government of India’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).

The RDSS is designed to accelerate reforms in the power sector by improving operational efficiency, reducing distribution losses, enhancing billing and collection systems, and strengthening the financial health of power distribution companies across the country.

Smart meters are expected to provide several benefits, including accurate and real-time monitoring of electricity consumption, improved transparency in billing, faster detection of power outages, and greater convenience for consumers through digital access to usage information.

Officials believe that the deployment of advanced metering infrastructure will also help utilities optimise energy distribution and reduce inefficiencies that contribute to revenue losses.

The state government’s directive specifically emphasises the importance of cooperation from government employees to ensure the smooth execution of the installation drive and avoid unnecessary delays.

The initiative reflects the broader push towards technology-driven reforms in India’s power sector, with smart metering being viewed as a critical component in building a more efficient, consumer-friendly, and financially sustainable electricity distribution system.
