Cyber Crime Crackdown Leads to Major Arrests in Gujarat
Police in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district have uncovered what investigators describe as the biggest cyber crime case in the district’s history, involving suspicious transactions exceeding ₹310 crore through mule bank accounts. Five persons have been arrested as part of the state-wide “Operation Mule Hunt 2.0”.
In a major breakthrough against organised cybercrime, Gujarat Police have dismantled a cyber fraud network involving suspicious transactions worth more than ₹310 crore routed through mule bank accounts in Gir Somnath district, arresting five individuals linked to the operation.
Investigators described it as the largest cyber crime case detected in the district so far.
According to Gir Somnath Superintendent of Police Jaideepsinh Jadeja, the case was registered by the Cyber Crime Police Station under the ambit of the state-wide initiative titled “Operation Mule Hunt 2.0.”
Operation Mule Hunt 2.0
The campaign was recently launched across Gujarat with the objective of:
- Identifying mule account holders,
- Cracking down on organised cyber fraud syndicates,
- Tracing financial trails,
- Recovering money lost by cybercrime victims,
- Strengthening preventive measures against digital fraud.
Officials said the latest operation exposed a sophisticated financial network allegedly used to move illicit funds through multiple banking channels.
What Are Mule Accounts?
A mule account refers to a bank account that is used by fraudsters to receive, transfer, or launder illegally obtained money.
These accounts may be operated:
- With the knowledge of the account holder, or
- By exploiting unsuspecting individuals whose banking credentials are misused by criminals.
Cybercriminals often use such accounts to obscure the source and destination of fraudulent proceeds, making investigations more complex.
₹310 Crore Under Scanner
Police revealed that transactions amounting to over ₹310 crore passed through the accounts being investigated.
Authorities are now examining:
- The origin of the funds,
- The beneficiaries of the transactions,
- The role of each arrested individual,
- The possibility of links with larger inter-state or international cybercrime syndicates,
- The number of victims affected by the alleged fraud.
Five Arrested
Five accused have been arrested in connection with the case.
Investigators are interrogating them to determine the extent of the network and identify additional individuals involved in opening, operating, or facilitating the use of mule accounts.
Officials have not ruled out further arrests as the investigation progresses.
Rising Concern Over Cyber Fraud
The case underscores the growing challenge posed by cyber-enabled financial crimes in India.
Law enforcement agencies have repeatedly cautioned citizens against:
- Sharing banking credentials,
- Allowing others to use their bank accounts,
- Responding to suspicious financial requests,
- Participating in schemes promising easy money in exchange for account access.
Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious banking activity to cybercrime authorities.
The Gir Somnath case is expected to serve as a significant milestone in Gujarat’s efforts to combat digital financial fraud and dismantle networks exploiting the banking system for illegal gains.
