CBI Trap Operation Leads to Arrest of Police Officer in Chandigarh

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) posted at Chandigarh Police in connection with an alleged bribery case.

According to the CBI, a case was registered on June 6, 2026, following a complaint that the accused ASI, attached to Sector-39 Police Station in Chandigarh, had demanded a bribe of ₹50,000 from a complainant. The alleged demand was made in exchange for releasing the complainant’s vehicle and not registering a criminal case against him in relation to a road accident matter that was under inquiry.

Investigators stated that after negotiations, the accused allegedly agreed to accept ₹40,000 as illegal gratification. Acting on the complaint, the CBI organized a trap operation on June 6 and reportedly caught the ASI red-handed while accepting the bribe amount from the complainant.

Following the arrest, the agency initiated searches at premises linked to the accused to gather additional evidence. Officials said the operation forms part of the CBI’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption and ensure accountability within public institutions.

The arrested officer is expected to be produced before the competent court in Chandigarh. Meanwhile, investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged demand and acceptance of the bribe, as well as any possible wider implications connected to the case.

The incident underscores the role of anti-corruption agencies in addressing allegations of misconduct among public servants and reinforcing transparency in law enforcement processes.
