Election riots… 2 people killed in police firing!
The Kero Hills Autonomous District Council elections in Meghalaya are scheduled to be held on April 10. Filing of nominations for the same began last week. It was announced that candidates will have to submit a certificate of tribal affiliation along with their nomination papers. This decision has been welcomed by tribal organizations.
But some non-tribal leaders protested against the decision. As part of this, protesters laid siege to the Deputy Commissioner’s office in the Dura area. Following this, riots suddenly broke out there. Following this, a night curfew was imposed in the area.
But many people defied the ban and rioted throughout the night. The police opened fire to disperse the crowd. It is reported that two people died in the firing. As tension continues in the area, the army has been deployed for security.
