Heavy Rainfall Alert Issued for Northeast and Eastern India
The India Meteorological Department has predicted continued rainfall activity across northwest India, accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds, and hailstorms. With conditions turning increasingly favourable, the southwest monsoon is also expected to advance into several more states over the next few days, bringing widespread rainfall and relief from the heat.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the ongoing wet spell over northwest India is likely to persist until tomorrow, with several regions expected to experience thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and hailstorms.
According to the weather agency, atmospheric conditions remain favourable for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon during the next two to three days. The monsoon is expected to progress into Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, parts of West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, expanding its footprint across the country.
The IMD has also issued warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya during the next four days. These northeastern states, which frequently witness intense monsoon activity, have been advised to remain alert to the possibility of localised flooding and disruptions.
In addition, Bihar, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim are expected to receive heavy rainfall tomorrow, prompting authorities and residents to monitor local weather advisories closely.
The department has further predicted thunderstorms and lightning over Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand over the next two days. Gusty winds accompanying these weather systems could affect transportation and outdoor activities in some areas.
Meanwhile, strong surface winds are likely to prevail over coastal Karnataka and south interior Karnataka until Monday, and residents in these regions have been advised to exercise caution, particularly fishermen and those engaged in outdoor work.
The IMD has urged people living in vulnerable areas to stay updated through official forecasts, avoid sheltering under isolated trees during lightning events, and take necessary precautions against adverse weather conditions.
The advancing monsoon is expected to bring much-needed relief from soaring temperatures in many regions while also supporting agricultural activities that depend heavily on seasonal rainfall. However, authorities continue to caution that intense weather events associated with the monsoon season require preparedness and timely response.
