Calcutta High Court to Hear Abhishek Banerjee’s Plea for Relief from CID Action
The Calcutta High Court will hear Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee’s plea seeking protection from coercive action by the CID in connection with its probe into the alleged forgery of signatures of TMC MLAs. The matter comes amid escalating political tensions within the party.
The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday agreed to hear a petition filed by Abhishek Banerjee, seeking protection from any coercive action by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with its probe into the alleged forgery of signatures of TMC legislators.
The matter was mentioned before the court of Justice Kausik Chanda by senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee, who requested an urgent hearing.
Kalyan Banerjee informed the court that the Diamond Harbour Parliamentary Constituency MP’s office had been searched by CID officials on Tuesday when Abhishek Banerjee was not present.

Taking note of the submission, Justice Chanda directed that the petition be listed for hearing on Thursday.
The plea seeks judicial protection against any coercive measures, including possible summons, detention, or arrest, while the CID continues its investigation into allegations that signatures of several All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs were forged on documents related to the recognition of the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
The alleged forgery controversy has emerged as a major flashpoint within the TMC, intensifying the party’s ongoing internal crisis. The CID has already conducted searches and issued notices to gather evidence related to the disputed documents.
The development marks another significant legal and political twist in the widening investigation, which has sparked debates over accountability, internal dissent, and the functioning of the party’s leadership.
The outcome of Thursday’s hearing is expected to determine whether Abhishek Banerjee receives interim protection from investigative action as the probe progresses.
Meanwhile, political observers are closely monitoring the case, given its potential implications for both the investigation and the evolving dynamics within West Bengal’s ruling party.
