Bengal Government Acts Against Officers in RG Kar Probe
The Government of West Bengal has suspended three senior IPS officers, including former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, over alleged mishandling of the investigation into the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case. The action follows a departmental inquiry into alleged procedural lapses and misconduct.
The Government of West Bengal on Friday suspended three senior IPS officers for alleged mishandling and dereliction of duty during the initial phase of the investigation into the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case.
Announcing the decision at Nabanna, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the suspension orders were issued following a departmental inquiry initiated against the officers.
The suspended officers include former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, former Deputy Commissioner Indira Mukherjee, and former Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Gupta.
According to the chief minister, the officers were allegedly involved in mishandling aspects of the investigation related to the gruesome crime that occurred in August 2024. Allegations against them include procedural lapses, conducting an unauthorised press conference, and allegedly attempting to offer money to the victim’s parents.
Officials said the departmental proceedings would continue, and further action could follow based on the findings of the inquiry.
The suspension of senior officers marks a significant administrative move in one of the most high-profile and sensitive criminal cases in the state in recent years.
