India’s BRICS Chairship Receives Strong Support From Member Nations

Foreign ministers of BRICS member nations have reaffirmed their commitment to reforming and improving global governance systems, according to the outcome document released after the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

The ministers reiterated their support for promoting an equitable, democratic, legitimate, and accountable international and multilateral order. They noted that the current global environment marked by polarization and distrust requires stronger international cooperation to maintain peace and security.

The ministers called on the global community to address emerging security challenges through political and diplomatic measures aimed at reducing the risk of conflicts. They also stressed the importance of conflict prevention initiatives, including addressing the root causes of disputes and instability.

Climate change and sustainability featured prominently in the discussions, with the ministers reaffirming their commitment to multilateralism as an essential tool for tackling global challenges affecting the planet and future generations. They also highlighted the importance of strengthening infrastructure resilience against climate-related and disaster risks.

The ministers underlined the need to ensure freedom of navigation and maritime security in the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait in accordance with international law.

On economic cooperation, BRICS members highlighted the role of their economies in driving innovation, promoting technological cooperation, and advancing Industry 4.0 initiatives. They also supported stronger collaboration among start-ups and small and medium enterprises through intra-BRICS partnerships and exchanges.

The meeting also focused on global health cooperation. Ministers stressed the importance of building equitable, accessible, and resilient healthcare systems through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and capacity-building initiatives.

The ministers further called for strengthening the Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA) and encouraged greater participation of newly inducted BRICS members in its operations. They welcomed the interest shown by new members in joining the mechanism voluntarily.

The ministers appreciated India’s leadership under its BRICS Chairship and expressed support for the country’s theme: “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability.”

Briefing the media in New Delhi after the meeting, Sudhakar Dalela said BRICS member and partner countries strongly supported India’s chairship priorities.

He added that member nations were able to find broad consensus across the three major pillars of BRICS cooperation — security, economic and financial cooperation, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
