Delhi Struggles with Water Crisis as Yamuna Runs Below Normal Levels
Several parts of the national capital continue to face water shortages despite efforts by authorities to stabilize supply. Officials attribute the ongoing crisis to critically low water levels in the Yamuna River at Wazirabad, which have significantly affected water production across the city.
The water crisis in Delhi shows little sign of easing, with residents in several areas continuing to face disrupted supply as water levels in the Yamuna River remain significantly below normal.
According to officials of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the city has been grappling with severe shortages for more than two weeks. The situation has been aggravated by the declining water level at the Wazirabad barrage, where the river has reportedly fallen nearly five feet below its normal level.
A senior DJB official stated that the overall situation remains largely unchanged despite efforts to manage distribution and maintain production levels. Over the last 24 hours, the city’s average water production stood at approximately 923 million gallons per day (MGD).
Officials explained that the reduced flow in the Yamuna has directly affected the functioning of water treatment facilities. With parts of the river stream drying up, the availability of raw water for treatment and distribution has declined, impacting supply to numerous localities across the capital.
The DJB indicated that substantial improvement is unlikely until rainfall occurs in the upper catchment areas of the Yamuna basin. Increased precipitation upstream is expected to replenish river flows and restore water availability at treatment plants serving Delhi.
The prolonged shortage has forced authorities to closely monitor water production and distribution while urging residents to use water judiciously. Tanker services and emergency supply arrangements are being utilized in some affected areas to mitigate the impact on households.
The continuing crisis highlights Delhi’s dependence on river flows and seasonal rainfall for its water security. Experts note that prolonged dry conditions, rising demand, and pressure on water resources can intensify supply challenges during peak summer months.
Authorities are expected to keep monitoring river levels and weather conditions in the coming days, with hopes that rainfall in the Yamuna catchment region will provide relief to the city’s strained water supply system.
