Fresh Shigella Infections Detected in Four Kerala Districts
Kerala has reported new cases of Shigella infection in multiple districts, prompting health authorities to strengthen surveillance, launch awareness campaigns, and implement containment measures. The state government has assured residents that the situation remains under control despite the emergence of fresh infections.
Kerala has recorded fresh cases of Shigella infection across several districts, prompting the state Health Department to step up disease surveillance and preventive interventions to curb its spread.
State Health Minister K. Muralidharan said that the current situation remains under control and there is no cause for panic, even as health authorities continue to closely monitor developments.
According to the minister, six people have tested positive in Thiruvananthapuram, while two cases have been reported in Kollam and three in Kozhikode districts. Earlier, Wayanad district had already confirmed nine Shigella cases, bringing renewed focus on public health preparedness in the state.
The Health Department, in coordination with local self-government institutions, has initiated disease prevention and containment measures in the affected areas. Officials are conducting intensive awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public about hygiene practices and early recognition of symptoms.
Shigella is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the intestines and spreads through contaminated food, water, or poor hand hygiene. Common symptoms include diarrhoea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea, and, in some cases, bloody stools. Young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems are considered more vulnerable to severe complications.
Health authorities have advised the public to maintain strict personal hygiene, wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, consume safe drinking water, and ensure that food is prepared under hygienic conditions. People experiencing persistent diarrhoea, dehydration, or high fever have been urged to seek medical attention promptly.
Officials have reiterated that early detection, timely treatment, and community cooperation remain essential to preventing further transmission. The state government has assured that adequate medical facilities and response mechanisms are in place to manage the situation effectively.
