Weather Office Warns of Lightning, Hail and Strong Winds in Himachal

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued an orange alert for parts of Himachal Pradesh, warning of hailstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next two days.

According to the Meteorological Centre, the alert has been issued for June 11 and 12 for five districts of the hill state:

• Kangra District
• Kullu District
• Mandi District
• Shimla
• Sirmaur District

The weather office said these areas are likely to witness hailstorm activity accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds with speeds ranging between 40 and 50 kilometres per hour.

Wet Spell Till June 16

The IMD has also forecast a wet spell across Himachal Pradesh till June 16, with intermittent rainfall expected in several parts of the state.

Officials attributed the changing weather conditions to a fresh Western Disturbance, which is likely to affect the Western Himalayan region from June 11 onwards.

A Western Disturbance is an extratropical weather system originating over the Mediterranean region that brings rainfall, snowfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent.

Advisory for Residents

The weather department has advised residents and tourists to remain cautious, particularly in vulnerable areas prone to landslides and flash flooding. People have been urged to:

• Avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
• Stay indoors during periods of lightning activity.
• Secure loose outdoor objects that may be affected by strong winds.
• Follow updates issued by local authorities and disaster management agencies.
• Exercise caution while travelling through hilly terrain.

Farmers and horticulturists have also been advised to take necessary precautions to minimise potential damage to crops and orchards due to hailstorms and strong winds.

Relief from Rising Temperatures

The expected rainfall is likely to bring relief from rising daytime temperatures across the state. However, weather experts cautioned that severe localised weather events could temporarily disrupt transportation and outdoor activities.

Authorities continue to monitor the evolving weather situation closely as Himachal Pradesh prepares for several days of unsettled conditions.
