Strong Evening Storm Forces Residents Indoors Across South Bengal
A powerful nor’wester swept across Kolkata and neighbouring districts on Wednesday evening, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and lightning. The sudden change in weather provided much-needed respite from the oppressive heat and humidity that had gripped the region for days.
A strong nor’wester, locally known as Kalbaisakhi, swept through Kolkata and several adjoining districts on Wednesday evening, bringing significant relief from the hot and humid conditions that had persisted over the past few days.
The sudden spell of inclement weather was accompanied by heavy rainfall, lightning, thunder, and gusty winds, prompting residents to seek shelter indoors as dark clouds engulfed the city and surrounding areas.
Earlier in the day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast severe thunderstorm activity across parts of southern West Bengal.

According to the weather department, districts likely to be affected included:
- Kolkata
- Howrah
- North 24 Parganas
- South 24 Parganas
- Purba Medinipur
- Hooghly
The IMD had warned of lightning strikes, heavy showers, and strong winds, urging people to remain cautious and avoid open spaces during the storm.

As the nor’wester moved through the region, strong winds lashed trees and roads, while rain drenched large parts of the city. Traffic movement slowed in several areas as commuters rushed to safety amid the sudden change in weather conditions.
However, the storm brought welcome relief from the sweltering heat. Temperatures dropped sharply following the rainfall, easing discomfort caused by high humidity levels and soaring daytime temperatures.
Nor’westers are a characteristic pre-monsoon weather phenomenon in eastern India, particularly affecting West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and neighbouring regions during the summer months. While they often provide respite from intense heat, these storms can also bring damaging winds, lightning, and localised disruptions.

Weather officials have advised residents to continue monitoring updates and exercise caution, especially during periods of thunderstorm activity, as isolated spells of rain and gusty winds may persist over the coming days.
For many in Kolkata, Wednesday evening’s downpour marked a welcome break from the oppressive weather and a reminder of the seasonal transition as the monsoon gradually advances across eastern India.
