Monsoon Advances Across West Bengal, Ending Heat and Humidity
The India Meteorological Department has announced that the southwest monsoon has advanced across almost the entire state of West Bengal, easing the prolonged spell of hot and humid weather. Rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to continue over southern districts, while northern regions may witness heavy showers in the coming days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said that the southwest monsoon has advanced into most parts of West Bengal, bringing much-needed relief from the oppressive heat and humidity that had gripped the state in recent weeks.
According to the weather department, the monsoon has covered almost the entire state, with the exception of the western tip of Purulia district, where conditions are yet to become fully favourable for its arrival.
The advancement of the monsoon is expected to significantly improve weather conditions, particularly in regions that have experienced prolonged spells of high temperatures and uncomfortable humidity levels.
The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by rain in Kolkata and several southern districts of West Bengal on Friday. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during periods of lightning and gusty winds associated with thunderstorm activity.
The department attributed the widespread rainfall to favourable wind patterns and strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal, which are enhancing monsoon activity across the region.
Meteorologists have predicted that southern Bengal is likely to continue receiving rainfall and thunderstorms until June 15, providing sustained relief from the prevailing weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the sub-Himalayan districts of northern West Bengal are expected to witness heavy showers during the same period. Authorities in these areas have been advised to monitor the situation closely, as intense rainfall could lead to localised waterlogging and disruptions in vulnerable locations.
The onset and advancement of the southwest monsoon are particularly significant for the state’s agricultural sector, as timely rainfall supports sowing activities and replenishes water resources critical for farming operations.
While the rains are expected to improve overall conditions, the IMD has urged the public to stay updated through official advisories and take necessary precautions during adverse weather events.
