Political Uproar Over Arrest of “Captain” Ashok Kharat in Nashik
Maharashtra’s political circles are in a state of turmoil following the arrest of self-proclaimed religious leader and numerologist, Captain Ashok Kharat, in Nashik. Kharat, who gained fame for his alleged connections with high-profile politicians and celebrities, was arrested by the Nashik Police Crime Branch today on charges of raping and sexually exploiting a 27-year-old woman. The victim alleged that Kharat drugged and filmed her, later using the footage to blackmail her over several years.
The case took an even more explosive turn when police recovered approximately 58 objectionable videos from Kharat’s mobile phone, featuring various women in compromising positions. As news of the arrest spread, photos and videos of Kharat with top state leaders began circulating on social media. Most notably, a video showing Rupali Chakankar, the Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission, washing Kharat’s feet has sparked a massive political row. Chakankar has defended herself, stating she has no knowledge of his personal life and has full faith in the police investigation.
Opposition parties have seized the opportunity to attack the ruling coalition, questioning the proximity of “godmen” to the corridors of power. Kharat has been booked under the Indian Penal Code for rape and fraud, as well as under the Maharashtra Prevention of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013. The investigation is now expanding to identify other potential victims, while the political fallout continues to dominate the headlines across the state.
