Security Agencies Probe Alleged Al Qaeda Threat in Kolkata
Kolkata Police has arrested a 27-year-old man from Garden Reach for allegedly sending an email threatening a suicide bomb attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari while claiming links to the terror outfit Al Qaeda.
A 27-year-old man was arrested from the Garden Reach area of Kolkata for allegedly sending an email threatening a suicide bomb attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, police said on Saturday.
The accused, identified as Hasnain Iqbal, was arrested on Friday night following a joint investigation carried out by the cyber cell and the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police.
According to Additional Commissioner of Police-IV V Solomon Nesakumar, the threatening email was received by Bhowanipore Police Station at around 10:15 am on May 14.
Officials said the email allegedly threatened a suicide bomb attack on the chief minister and referred to the terror organisation Al Qaeda. Authorities subsequently launched an investigation to trace the sender.
Police said the accused was tracked and apprehended during the joint operation conducted by cybercrime investigators and the STF. Further interrogation and forensic analysis of digital evidence are currently underway.
Security agencies are also examining the motive behind the email and verifying whether the accused had any actual links to extremist elements or whether the claims were intended to create panic.
Authorities have not disclosed additional operational details due to the sensitive nature of the investigation.
