Woman Loses 650 Grams of Gold After Trusting Ritual Claims in Dehradun
A Dehradun resident has been arrested for allegedly exploiting a woman’s fears and superstitious beliefs to orchestrate an elaborate fraud involving 650 grams of gold. Police say the accused posed as a spiritual healer, warning of impending misfortune before making away with the valuables under the guise of conducting rituals.
The Dehradun Police have arrested a man accused of cheating a woman out of nearly 650 grams of gold by allegedly manipulating her through superstition and fear of an impending tragedy.
According to officials, the accused, identified as Rahul Thapa, allegedly preyed on vulnerable individuals by claiming to possess occult powers and warning them about potential dangers facing their families. He reportedly convinced victims that urgent spiritual interventions were necessary to ward off misfortune.
Police investigations revealed that Thapa would gain the trust of his targets by invoking fear and offering to conduct special rituals to protect their households. During these ceremonies, he allegedly collected money, jewellery, and other valuables under the pretext of purification or cleansing rituals before disappearing with them.
The case surfaced on May 31, when Oshin Gurung, a resident of Shaheed Kishan Thapa Marg in the Selaqui area of Dehradun, approached the police with a complaint. She alleged that approximately two-and-a-half months earlier, Thapa had visited her residence and warned her of a serious threat to her family’s well-being.
Driven by concern for her loved ones, Gurung agreed to allow the accused to perform rituals at her home. During the process, Thapa allegedly stole around 650 grams of gold jewellery, causing substantial financial loss to the family.
Acting on the complaint, police launched an investigation and eventually apprehended the accused. Officials stated that further inquiries are underway to determine whether Thapa may have used similar methods to target other victims in the region.
The incident has prompted authorities to caution the public against falling prey to individuals who exploit religious beliefs, fear, and superstition for personal gain. Police have urged citizens to verify credentials and promptly report suspicious activities involving self-proclaimed spiritual healers or occult practitioners.
