In a major breakthrough against illegal logging activities, the Tripura Forest Department has seized a large quantity of illegally felled timber during a special enforcement drive in Khowai district.

The Sub-Divisional Forest Department carried out a series of raids across the Khowai subdivision over the past two days as part of its ongoing campaign against timber smuggling and the unlawful exploitation of forest resources.

During the operation, officials recovered approximately 220 cubic feet of illegally cut timber and confiscated four vehicles allegedly used for transporting the contraband wood.

In addition, the authorities also seized tree-cutting machinery believed to have been used in the illegal felling activities.

According to Susmita Das, the estimated value of the recovered timber is close to ₹7 lakh.

Cases Registered

The Forest Department has registered four separate cases under the relevant provisions of the Indian Forest Act.

Investigations are currently underway to identify those involved in the illegal network and determine whether the smuggling operation had links extending beyond the district.

Commitment to Forest Protection

Officials reiterated that the department remains committed to safeguarding Tripura’s forest wealth and biodiversity.

The crackdown forms part of a broader strategy aimed at:

  • Preventing illegal tree felling,
  • Dismantling timber smuggling networks,
  • Conserving natural resources, and
  • Ensuring strict enforcement of forest laws.

The department has also appealed to local communities to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities related to illegal logging.
