India Welcomes Germany’s Transit Visa Waiver for Indian Nationals
Germany’s decision to exempt Indian nationals from airport transit visa requirements has come into effect today, marking a significant step in strengthening travel convenience and people-to-people ties between the two countries. India has welcomed the move, describing it as a positive development in bilateral relations.
Germany’s decision to waive the airport transit visa requirement for Indian nationals traveling through German airports exclusively for air transit has officially come into effect today.
The move allows eligible Indian travelers transiting through Germany en route to other destinations to do so without obtaining a separate airport transit visa, making international travel more convenient and streamlined.
The Ministry of External Affairs welcomed the development and said the new arrangement would further strengthen people-to-people connections between India and Germany.

In a social media statement, the ministry noted that the decision reflects the growing partnership between the two countries and is expected to facilitate smoother travel for Indian citizens using German airports as transit hubs.
According to the ministry, the announcement regarding the visa waiver was made in January this year following discussions between Narendra Modi and Friedrich Merz during the German leader’s visit to India.
Germany serves as a major aviation gateway for travelers heading to Europe, North America, and other international destinations. The removal of the transit visa requirement is expected to benefit thousands of Indian passengers who regularly transit through airports such as Frankfurt and Munich.

The decision is also viewed as a reflection of the strong and expanding bilateral relationship between India and Germany, encompassing trade, education, technology, mobility, and cultural exchanges.
Travel industry experts believe the measure will reduce travel-related paperwork, lower costs for passengers, and encourage greater mobility between the two countries while enhancing Germany’s attractiveness as a transit destination for Indian travelers.
The development adds to a series of initiatives aimed at deepening cooperation and improving connectivity between India and Germany.
