West Bengal to Focus on Sports Reforms and Youth Development, Says Khan

West Bengal’s newly-appointed Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Dr Indranil Khan, on Thursday alleged that the state’s sports sector had previously been affected by irregularities and administrative lapses, and asserted that his government would prioritise restoring confidence and strengthening the sporting ecosystem.
Speaking to reporters shortly after assuming charge of the department, Khan said that allegations of corruption and mismanagement in various aspects of sports administration had surfaced over time and warranted careful examination.
“Just as questions were raised in sectors such as education and health, there have also been allegations of irregularities in sports. Our priority is to move beyond that phase and create a system that encourages transparency, accountability and sporting excellence,” he said.
The minister emphasised that the focus of the government would not merely be on identifying past shortcomings, but on implementing reforms that create lasting benefits for athletes and sporting institutions across the state.
Among the key priorities outlined by Khan were the improvement of sports infrastructure, strengthening grassroots programmes, ensuring fair opportunities for aspiring athletes, and building a transparent administrative framework that inspires confidence among stakeholders.
He also highlighted the importance of creating a healthier and more supportive environment for young sportspersons, stating that talent development must be backed by proper facilities, effective governance, and accountability at every level.
