KOLKATA: Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced a confrontation with protesters on Sunday during her visit to the family of a TMC worker who allegedly died in police custody in North 24 Parganas district.
A group of protesters reportedly surrounded Banerjee’s vehicle, raised “chor-chor” slogans and allegedly hurled mud and slippers at the car. Police formed a security cordon around the vehicle as protesters blocked its movement, turning the visit into a tense political confrontation.
The incident sparked competing accusations from rival groups, with protesters citing public anger and alleged administrative failure, while Banerjee described the attack as a conspiracy.
Speaking to reporters after reaching the area, Banerjee said her vehicle had been attacked with stones, shoes and mud. She also alleged that she had informed the police in advance about her visit but that adequate security arrangements had not been made.
The incident has added a political dimension to the controversy surrounding the alleged death of the TMC worker in police custody, with questions being raised over security arrangements and the circumstances surrounding the death.
