Bengal Poll Voter Roll Dispute Gets Fresh Supreme Court Observation

Published

on

The Supreme Court of India has declined to entertain pleas seeking immediate intervention over the alleged exclusion of certain personnel deputed on election duty from voter rolls during the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Counsel appearing for the petitioners informed a bench led by Surya Kant that even officials engaged in conducting elections were unable to vote due to their names allegedly being missing from the electoral rolls.

Responding to the submissions, the bench said the matter should first be raised before the Appellate Tribunal and observed that the Court could not modify its orders every day.

Joymalya Bagchi remarked that irrespective of whether the affected persons would be able to vote this year, their more significant right to remain on the voter rolls would still be examined by the Court.

The development comes amid ongoing scrutiny of electoral roll revisions and related concerns during the West Bengal Assembly elections.
