Sabyasachi to Unveil Byzantine-Inspired High Jewellery at New York Fashion Week
Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee and The Metropolitan Museum of Art have announced a multi-year collaboration that will draw on the museum’s extensive art and cultural collections to inspire contemporary jewellery, accessories and clothing.
KOLKATA: Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee and The Metropolitan Museum of Art have announced a multi-year collaboration that will see the designer draw inspiration from the museum’s extensive collection of art and culture for new contemporary jewellery, accessories and clothing.
The first chapter of the collaboration will feature a high jewellery collection from Mukherjee’s label, Sabyasachi, inspired by the art of the Byzantine Empire. The collection will be unveiled during a runway presentation at New York Fashion Week on September 15, according to a press release.
The Byzantine-inspired collection draws from the artistic heritage of the Byzantine Empire, the eastern continuation of the Roman Empire. The empire was centred in Constantinople, modern-day Istanbul, and existed from the fourth through the 15th centuries.
The collaboration represents an intersection of Indian fashion and global art heritage, with Sabyasachi’s upcoming work drawing on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s vast cultural resources to create contemporary interpretations across jewellery, accessories and fashion.
