Meta Meets IT Minister as Centre Examines Platform’s Compliance Practices

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on Thursday continued its discussions with Meta’s visiting global team in New Delhi to examine whether the social media company is complying with Indian laws. According to official sources, the discussions focused on understanding the technical aspects of the company’s compliance with regulations applicable in India.

Officials emphasized that digital platforms operating in India cannot function solely under the legal framework of another country and have a responsibility to comply with Indian laws. The sources also stated that all online platforms, like other institutions, are expected to uphold their responsibilities towards society and the legal system. During the visit, Meta’s delegation also met Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

This marks the second round of questioning of Meta’s global team by the government. The discussions follow the temporary restriction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook post, which addressed students and youth while promising strict action against examination paper leaks. The post remained unavailable for nearly five hours before being restored. Meta later attributed the incident to an error in its AI-powered automated content filtering system and issued an apology for the mistake.
