Kolkata Trapped in Severe Heatwave as ‘Feels Like’ Temp Hits 44°C
KOLKATA: The Alipore Meteorological Department has issued a “Red Alert” for Kolkata and South Bengal as a severe heatwave gripped the region today. While the mercury officially touched 36.5°C by noon, the extreme humidity levels—reaching 90%—have pushed the “Real Feel” temperature to a staggering 44°C. The dry, sunny conditions are expected to persist for the next 72 hours with zero precipitation in sight.
The Met office described the current weather pattern as a “Silent Disaster,” noting that the combination of high UV radiation (Index 10+) and stagnant air has made outdoor activities hazardous. Hospital admissions for heatstroke and dehydration have surged in the last 24 hours, particularly among children and senior citizens. Public health officials have advised people to remain indoors between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM and to stay hydrated.
The heatwave is also significantly impacting the election campaign. Political parties have been forced to reschedule their massive open-air rallies to early mornings or late evenings. “We are seeing a 30% drop in rally attendance during the afternoons. It’s simply too dangerous for people to stand in the sun,” said a campaign manager for a major party. The weather department warned that if the heatwave continues, the state might face a “thermal emergency” that could further disrupt public services.
