The rice industry in West Bengal, India’s largest rice-producing state, has called on the new BJP-led government to improve infrastructure, streamline approvals, and expand export support to encourage investment and growth in the sector.

Industry representatives said better connectivity, quicker administrative clearances, and enhanced support for exports are essential to improve operational efficiency and competitiveness.

Suraj Agarwal, CEO of Ricevilla Foods, said the sector is particularly seeking improved infrastructure for rice mills and warehouses in rural regions.

According to Agarwal, poor road connectivity, inadequate drainage systems, and delays in obtaining electricity connections continue to affect rice mill operations in several districts.

“In many rural districts, electricity connections for new rice mills take months, causing delays, higher project costs and harassment. The industry expects faster services and proper infrastructure support from the government,” he said.

Industry stakeholders believe that improving logistics and warehousing facilities would reduce operational bottlenecks, minimise wastage, and help strengthen supply chains for both domestic and export markets.

West Bengal plays a major role in India’s rice production and export ecosystem, with thousands of rice mills operating across the state and supporting large-scale rural employment.

Representatives from the sector also emphasised the need for stronger export promotion initiatives to help Indian rice remain competitive in global markets amid rising international competition and fluctuating trade conditions.

The demands come as the new state government begins consultations with industries and businesses regarding investment, infrastructure development, and economic growth priorities.
