Nearly 5.49 lakh candidates appeared for the Civil Services Preliminary Examination conducted on Sunday by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

In a significant technological upgrade aimed at enhancing transparency and preventing impersonation, the commission introduced real-time face authentication of candidates at examination venues for the first time this year.

According to the UPSC, the indigenously developed authentication system was created through the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The commission stated that the system functioned smoothly and effectively across all examination centres.

Officials said the initiative was introduced to strengthen the integrity of the examination process and ensure stricter verification of candidates appearing for one of India’s most competitive recruitment examinations.

The UPSC Civil Services Examination is conducted annually to recruit officers for prestigious services including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and other central civil services.
