Indian Customs officials at Indira Gandhi International Airport have registered a case of drug smuggling following the seizure of 17.720 kilograms of suspected hydroponic weed (ganja), including packing material, during an operation conducted by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU).

According to officials, a passenger travelling from Bangkok to New Delhi on flight AI-2335 dated May 12, 2026, was discreetly placed under surveillance by customs officers at the airport.

At the same time, another passenger arriving from Sharjah on flight IX-136 was spot-profiled while crossing the Green Channel carrying a bag that did not have any baggage tag. During X-ray screening, customs officers detected suspicious images in the baggage.

Officials said that during detailed questioning and personal search, baggage tags were recovered from the passenger, who admitted that he had been instructed to collect the bag booked in the name of the Bangkok passenger.

Further examination of the baggage led to the recovery of hydroponic weed weighing 17.720 kilograms. Authorities suspect the case may be linked to an organised international narcotics smuggling network.

Customs officials stated that further investigation is currently underway to identify additional individuals involved in the operation and trace the origin and intended distribution network of the seized contraband.
