Kochi Airport Handles Early-Morning Aircraft Emergency Without Disruption
An Air Arabia flight carrying 170 passengers and nine infants was diverted to Cochin International Airport in the early hours of Saturday after a technical issue involving the aircraft’s reverse thrust system. The aircraft landed safely, and all passengers and crew remained unharmed.
An Air Arabia flight operating from Sharjah to Kozhikode was diverted to Cochin International Airport during the early hours of Saturday after the crew reported a technical issue related to the aircraft’s engine reverse thrust system.
According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Cochin International Airport, the aircraft involved was Air Arabia Flight G9 454, which had originally been scheduled to land at Kozhikode International Airport (CCJ).
In line with established aviation safety procedures, airport authorities immediately activated emergency protocols upon receiving information about the technical snag.
A local standby was declared at 3:19 am, ensuring that emergency response teams remained on alert. Subsequently, a full emergency was declared at 3:34 am to facilitate the readiness of all airport rescue and firefighting services.
The aircraft landed safely at 3:38 am and was escorted to a designated parking bay, where technical assessments and safety inspections were carried out.
Following the completion of all necessary checks and confirmation that the situation had been brought under control, the full emergency status was withdrawn at 3:45 am.
Officials confirmed that there were 170 passengers and nine infants onboard the flight, along with the crew members. All occupants were reported safe, and no injuries were sustained during the incident.
Airport authorities also clarified that the emergency response operation had no impact on regular airport operations, with flight schedules and passenger services continuing without disruption.
After engineers successfully rectified the technical snag involving the reverse thrust system, the aircraft resumed its journey and departed for Kozhikode at 7:15 am.
The reverse thrust system is an important aircraft mechanism used to assist in deceleration after landing by redirecting engine thrust. Any issue involving this system is treated with utmost caution under international aviation safety guidelines.
The incident highlighted the effectiveness of established emergency response protocols and the coordinated efforts of airport authorities, technical teams, and airline personnel in ensuring passenger safety.
