TRAI Issues Draft Consumer Protection Regulation 2026

NEW DELHI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released the Draft Telecom Consumer Protection (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulation, 2026. The new draft aims to tighten the norms around unsolicited commercial communications and enhance the transparency of data billing for 5G and 6G services.

This move comes as the government faces increasing pressure to curb the menace of “spam calls” and digital fraud that has plagued the expanding Indian telecom market.

The draft also proposes stricter penalties for telecom service providers (TSPs) that fail to resolve consumer grievances within the stipulated timeframe. TRAI has invited stakeholders and the general public to submit their comments on the draft by the end of the month.

This regulation is expected to be a game-changer for the millions of Indian mobile users who have been demanding better service quality and “faceless” grievance redressal mechanisms.
