N Chandrasekaran will step down as chairman of Tata Sons when his current term ends on February 20, 2027, marking the end of nearly a decade at the helm of one of India’s most prominent business groups. Chandrasekaran, 63, has spent around four decades with the Tata Group.

Chandrasekaran informed the Tata Sons board on Wednesday that he would not seek reappointment after the completion of his current term. He has also asked the board to identify his successor well in advance to ensure a smooth leadership transition. Recent reports confirm that he will continue in the role until the end of his existing term.

His decision follows months of uncertainty surrounding his possible continuation as chairman. Differences over his reappointment reportedly emerged between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts, with the issue becoming a significant governance matter within the group.

Tata Sons is the principal holding company and promoter of Tata group companies. Tata Trusts collectively hold about 66 per cent of Tata Sons, giving the trusts substantial influence over decisions concerning the group’s governance and leadership.

Chandrasekaran became chairman of Tata Sons in February 2017. His departure in February 2027 will therefore close a 10-year period in which he led the group’s overall strategy and represented the Tata Group at the highest level.

The immediate focus will now shift to the succession process, with the Tata Sons board expected to work towards identifying a new chairman well before Chandrasekaran’s term expires.
