India-Nepal Digital Payment Corridor Opens for Citizens
India and Nepal have operationalised a peer-to-peer cross-border remittance mechanism by linking India’s UPI with Nepal’s National Payments Interface, enabling instant, secure, and seamless money transfers between citizens of both countries.
In a landmark step towards enhancing regional digital financial integration, India and Nepal have launched a peer-to-peer cross-border remittance mechanism, enabling citizens of both countries to transfer money instantly through their mobile devices.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance, the newly operational system establishes a direct connection between India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Nepal’s National Payments Interface (NPI).
The integration allows users in both countries to make real-time, secure, and seamless cross-border money transfers directly through:
- Mobile banking applications,
- Digital wallets, and
- Other participating payment platforms.
A Major Milestone in Digital Connectivity
The UPI-NPI linkage is being seen as a significant advancement in strengthening financial and digital ties between the neighbouring countries.
The Finance Ministry said the initiative would:

- Strengthen long-standing social and economic relations, and
- Foster deeper regional cooperation.

The digital payment corridor is expected to transform the way individuals and businesses conduct transactions across the India-Nepal border.

Boost to Cross-Border Commerce
The Finance Ministry highlighted that the initiative would particularly benefit local businesses operating in border regions, where economic interactions between the two countries remain robust.
By enabling real-time settlements, the mechanism is expected to simplify commercial transactions and support the growth of small enterprises that rely on frequent cross-border payments.
Supporting Regional Payment Goals
The ministry noted that the launch aligns with broader regional objectives aimed at creating payment systems that are:
- Accessible,
- Safe,
- Efficient, and
- Affordable.
The move reinforces the shared commitment of India and Nepal to leveraging technology for inclusive economic growth and greater financial connectivity.
Strengthening Historic Ties
India and Nepal share deep cultural, social, and economic linkages, with significant movement of people across the open border for trade, employment, education, and tourism.
The introduction of the UPI-NPI remittance corridor is expected to further strengthen these bonds by making financial transactions easier and more efficient for millions of users.
As digital payments continue to reshape financial ecosystems worldwide, the India-Nepal initiative marks another milestone in South Asia’s journey towards a more interconnected and digitally empowered future.
