E85 Fuel Introduced in India, Promises Lower Costs and Reduced Emissions
Marking World Environment Day, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched E85 fuel in New Delhi, calling it a major step toward cleaner mobility. The new fuel, designed for flex-fuel vehicles, will be available at a significantly lower price than conventional E20 blended fuel.
On the occasion of World Environment Day>, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched E85 fuel for flex-fuel vehicles in New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in India’s efforts to promote cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
Speaking at the launch event, the minister described the introduction of E85 fuel as a landmark initiative in India’s ongoing energy transition. He emphasized that increasing the use of ethanol-based fuels can help reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower carbon emissions, and support the country’s environmental and energy security goals.
E85 fuel contains up to 85 percent ethanol blended with petrol and is specifically designed for flex-fuel vehicles capable of operating on higher ethanol concentrations. The initiative aligns with the government’s broader strategy to expand the use of biofuels and encourage cleaner mobility solutions across the country.
A key announcement made during the launch was the pricing of the new fuel. According to the minister, E85 fuel will be priced at approximately ₹20 per litre lower than regular E20 blended fuel, making it an attractive option for consumers while promoting wider adoption of ethanol-based transportation fuels.
The rollout is expected to benefit India’s agricultural sector as well, since ethanol production largely depends on feedstocks such as sugarcane and other agricultural products. Increased ethanol demand could provide additional opportunities for farmers while contributing to the country’s renewable energy objectives.
The launch on World Environment Day underscores India’s commitment to reducing emissions, diversifying its energy mix, and accelerating the transition toward greener and more sustainable transportation solutions.
