Food safety officials in Meghalaya conducted a surprise inspection at a local market in Shillong on Friday and seized a consignment of pointed gourds, commonly known as patol, after preliminary tests indicated the possible presence of artificial colouring substances. The action was taken as part of routine market surveillance aimed at ensuring that vegetables sold to consumers meet safety standards.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Food Safety D. B. S. Mukhim, samples from the seized consignment have been collected and forwarded to an accredited laboratory for detailed analysis. The final laboratory report will determine whether prohibited colouring agents were used and whether further enforcement measures are necessary.

The inspection follows growing concerns over food adulteration after a whistleblower in neighbouring Assam recently alleged that some vendors were enhancing the appearance of pointed gourds using artificial colours. Such practices can mislead consumers and may pose health risks depending on the chemicals involved.

Officials stated that monitoring activities will continue across markets in Meghalaya, with particular attention being paid to fresh produce. Authorities have also urged traders to comply with food safety regulations and advised consumers to purchase vegetables from reliable sources.

The incident highlights the increasing focus on food quality and consumer protection across northeastern states, where regulatory agencies are stepping up checks to prevent the sale of adulterated or unsafe food products.
