The Russian Embassy in South Africa has announced that scientists in Russia have developed a new vaccine against the latest strain of the Ebola virus.

According to Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko, the vaccine has been designed to address emerging Ebola variants and may also offer protection against the rare Bundibugyo strain associated with recent outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The announcement comes after the World Health Organization declared Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda a global public health emergency on the 17th of this month under International Health Regulations.

In response to the health alert, India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation issued a Standard Operating Procedure for airlines operating flights connected to Uganda and Congo. Airlines have been instructed to ensure mandatory collection of self-declaration forms from passengers before disembarkation.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has also classified the Ebola outbreak as a continental health emergency, highlighting concerns about the possible spread of infections across neighbouring regions.

Health authorities have urged countries to strengthen passenger screening and surveillance measures for travellers arriving from affected areas. The WHO has further advised people to avoid non-essential travel to locations where the Bundibugyo strain has been detected.

Neighbouring countries, including South Sudan, are considered to be at high risk due to cross-border movement and regional connectivity.

Ebola remains one of the world’s deadliest viral diseases, often associated with severe symptoms and high fatality rates. At present, there are no officially approved vaccines or treatments specifically targeting the Bundibugyo strain, making the Russian vaccine announcement particularly significant in the global public health context.
