The Government of India has launched an indigenous Cell Broadcast System designed to deliver instant disaster alerts directly to citizens’ mobile devices.

As part of a nationwide test, a notification accompanied by a siren alert was sent around noon, informing users that it was only a test message and no action was required.

Jyotiraditya Scindia clarified via social media that citizens should not panic upon receiving such alerts, as they are part of testing India’s new mobile-based disaster communication system.

The system has been developed by the Department of Telecommunications in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), leveraging cell broadcast technology.

Officials said the platform will enable authorities to send real-time alerts during emergencies such as natural disasters, tailored to specific locations and in local languages.
