Lotus Silk Craft Boosts Green Textile Economy in Chhattisgarh

Published

on

Raipur is witnessing a unique rural employment transformation through the production of lotus silk, one of the world’s rarest and most sustainable fabrics.

Unlike conventional silk produced from silkworms, lotus silk is made from fibres extracted from lotus plant stalks. The fabric is considered 100 per cent sustainable, biodegradable and environmentally friendly, making it increasingly relevant in the modern textile market.

Women in rural areas are playing a key role in the initiative, gaining steady livelihoods through the traditional craft. Aarti said workers extract fibres by breaking lotus stalks and layering the fibres together to create thread.

She added that many women who earlier stayed at home now have regular employment opportunities through the work. The initiative is also helping strengthen self-reliance and income generation among rural families in Chhattisgarh.
