Facial Recognition-Based Airport Travel Gains Wider Reach
The Civil Aviation Ministry has announced that the DigiYatra facility, which enables seamless and contactless airport travel through facial recognition technology, will be rolled out at 27 additional airports by next year.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation on Saturday announced that the DigiYatra facility will be extended to 27 more airports across the country by next year, further expanding India’s digital aviation infrastructure.
DigiYatra uses Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) to facilitate contactless and seamless movement of passengers through various airport checkpoints, significantly reducing waiting times and enhancing travel convenience.

According to the ministry, the facility is currently operational at 38 airports across India and has already transformed the passenger experience by speeding up airport entry and verification processes.
Key Achievements of DigiYatra
| Indicator | Figures |
|---|---|
| Airports Currently Covered | 38 |
| Additional Airports Planned | 27 |
| DigiYatra App Downloads | Over 2.4 Crore |
| Seamless Journeys Enabled | More than 10 Crore |
The ministry said the DigiYatra application has recorded more than 2.4 crore downloads, while facilitating over 10 crore seamless passenger journeys since its introduction.

How DigiYatra Works
DigiYatra allows travelers to verify their identity through facial recognition instead of repeatedly presenting physical documents at airport checkpoints. The system is designed to:
- Reduce airport entry time.
- Enable contactless travel.
- Improve passenger convenience.
- Enhance operational efficiency at airports.
- Minimize congestion at security and boarding points.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader push toward digital transformation and smart airport infrastructure.

Future Expansion
With the addition of 27 more airports, DigiYatra’s footprint will expand significantly, bringing the technology to a larger number of domestic travelers and helping standardize digital passenger processing across India’s aviation network.
Officials said the expansion is expected to further streamline airport operations while maintaining security standards and improving the overall travel experience.
