World’s Longest High-Altitude Bi-Directional Road Tunnel Nears Completion
The Zojila Tunnel project is approaching a landmark moment with its final breakthrough, marking a major achievement in India’s infrastructure journey. Once completed, the tunnel will provide year-round connectivity between Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, overcoming the severe weather challenges that have historically disrupted transportation in the region.
The Zojila Tunnel is set to achieve a historic milestone with its final breakthrough, bringing India closer to completing one of its most ambitious and strategically important infrastructure projects. Stretching 13.153 kilometres, the tunnel will be the world’s longest single-tube bi-directional road tunnel at such a high altitude.
Situated in the Zojila region between Baltal and Meenamarg, the tunnel is being constructed to ensure uninterrupted, all-weather road connectivity between the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The Zojila corridor has long been one of India’s most challenging mountain routes. Every year, heavy snowfall, avalanches, and extreme winter conditions force the closure of the road for extended periods, disrupting transportation, trade, tourism, and essential supplies. The tunnel is expected to eliminate these seasonal disruptions and significantly reduce travel time across the region.
Located at an altitude of approximately 11,578 feet above sea level, the project represents a remarkable engineering feat. Engineers have had to overcome difficult geological conditions, harsh weather, and logistical challenges while constructing the tunnel in the rugged Himalayan terrain.
Beyond improving civilian connectivity, the project holds immense strategic importance. It will enhance access to border areas, facilitate faster movement of goods and services, strengthen regional economic development, and improve connectivity for residents living in remote mountainous areas.
The tunnel is also expected to boost tourism in destinations such as Sonamarg, Drass, and Kargil, while providing greater reliability for transport and emergency services throughout the year.
As the project moves toward completion, the Zojila Tunnel is being hailed as one of the most significant achievements in India’s mountain infrastructure sector and a transformative development for connectivity in the Himalayan region.
