Apple has announced that John Ternus will become the company’s next Chief Executive Officer on September 1, succeeding Tim Cook.

Cook will step down from the CEO role and become executive chairman of Apple’s board of directors.

Apple said Cook will continue as CEO through the summer and work closely with Ternus to ensure a smooth leadership transition.

As executive chairman, Cook is expected to continue supporting the company in select areas, including engagement with policymakers around the world.
