In a politically significant development, C Joseph Vijay met Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Vijay, who is on a three-day visit to the national capital, met the Congress leaders at Sonia Gandhi’s residence at 10 Janpath, one of the most prominent political addresses in the country.

The meeting assumes importance as it is the first interaction between Vijay and the Gandhis in New Delhi after he assumed office as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in May.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is also scheduled to attend the NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting on Thursday, making this his second official visit to New Delhi since taking charge of the state administration.

The interaction reflects the cordial ties between Vijay and the Congress leadership. Notably, Rahul Gandhi had travelled to Chennai to attend Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony as Chief Minister earlier this year, signalling a growing political rapport.

While no official statement was issued regarding the agenda of Wednesday’s discussions, political observers believe the meeting could have touched upon a range of issues, including Centre-state relations, cooperation among opposition parties, and matters concerning Tamil Nadu’s developmental priorities.

The timing of the meeting, ahead of the NITI Aayog Governing Council session attended by chief ministers from across the country, has also drawn attention in political circles.

Vijay’s visit to the national capital is being closely watched as he continues to shape his government’s engagement with national leaders and institutions following his rise to the state’s top political office.

Further details regarding the discussions are awaited.
