In a fresh setback for the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev resigned from the Upper House on Wednesday, becoming the second party parliamentarian to step down this week.

Dev submitted her resignation to C. P. Radhakrishnan, formally relinquishing her membership of the House.

A former leader of the Indian National Congress, Sushmita Dev had joined the TMC a few years ago and subsequently entered the Rajya Sabha as a representative of the party. She had emerged as one of the prominent faces of the Trinamool Congress at the national level, frequently articulating the party’s positions on key political issues.

Her resignation comes at a time when the TMC is witnessing one of the most turbulent phases in its recent history. Earlier this week, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy resigned from both the Rajya Sabha and the primary membership of the party, citing serious concerns over the party’s functioning and governance issues.

The back-to-back resignations have intensified speculation about growing dissent within the party ranks following its recent electoral setbacks and internal disputes. The developments come amid a widening political crisis marked by allegations of forged signatures of party legislators, leadership disagreements, and an ongoing probe by the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

While Sushmita Dev has not publicly detailed the reasons behind her decision, her resignation is expected to have political ramifications, both within the party and in the broader opposition landscape.

Political observers believe the successive exits of senior leaders could further weaken the TMC’s parliamentary strength and raise questions about internal cohesion at a time when opposition parties are attempting to recalibrate strategies at the national level.

The Trinamool Congress has not yet issued an official statement regarding Dev’s resignation or its future course of action.

Further developments are expected as the party navigates an increasingly complex political situation.
