Opposition Should Draw Confidence from 2024 Performance: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday underlined the need for greater cohesion within the INDIA opposition bloc, asserting that the alliance had not truly been defeated in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and had, in fact, already secured the political momentum required to win the 2029 general elections.

Sharing excerpts from the speech he delivered during a meeting of the INDIA alliance earlier this week, Gandhi said several leaders had requested a Hindi translation of his address, prompting him to make it publicly available.

“After listening to the speeches and remarks of over 20 leaders at the INDIA Coalition meeting on June 8th, I finally addressed them with this speech,” Gandhi said.

In his remarks, the former Congress president stressed that the opposition alliance must remain united and focused on its long-term objectives rather than viewing the 2024 outcome as a setback.

According to Gandhi, the electoral performance of the INDIA bloc demonstrated that the opposition had succeeded in presenting a credible challenge and had substantially altered the national political narrative.

He argued that the alliance’s collective strength and expanding public outreach had already created the foundation for future electoral success.

Claiming that the opposition had effectively “won” the battle for 2029, Gandhi sought to boost the morale of alliance partners and encourage them to continue working together despite ideological differences and regional complexities.

The INDIA bloc, comprising several opposition parties from across the country, was formed with the objective of presenting a united front against the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Gandhi’s comments come at a time when opposition parties are assessing their strategies, organisational structures, and coordination mechanisms following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Political observers view his remarks as both a call for solidarity and an attempt to reinforce confidence among alliance partners about the bloc’s future prospects.

While supporters of the opposition alliance interpreted the statement as a message of optimism and resilience, leaders from the BJP have previously dismissed such assertions, maintaining that the electorate continues to place its trust in the NDA’s leadership and governance record.

As the political landscape gradually shifts towards future electoral contests, Gandhi’s emphasis on unity suggests that strengthening cooperation among alliance partners will remain central to the INDIA bloc’s strategy in the years ahead.
